Hypnotherapy is the oldest medicine known to man.
In primitive form, it predates language, and is even practised by animals.
We instinctively make soothing sounds when one of our young is hurt. The calming sound of being cared for and safe is pure hypnotic sound. It suggests the calm that the 'speaker' feels, in an easily accessible way. The body responds, sending natural painkillers and healing agents. The hurt person starts to feel better.
What's interesting is that the feeling-better is caused by a physical cycle in the nervous system, which increases immune system activity, and protects the brain from ongoing or reliving trauma. *
When you are suddenly hurt or traumatised, the horrible "under attack" feeling is suppressing the body's capacity to heal itself. But that does free up your muscles to be faster than usual getting to safety. Rather than rest and get better, all systems are on high alert for survival reflexes, until the danger is gone, or until someone capable is taking care of it.
When we really are safe, we relax immediately... because it means we can restore wellbeing and focus on our healing, to the exclusion of less important distractions from the outside world. Like on holiday.
In these safe times, we rest, recover, dream, recalibrate, restore. We make sense of things, consider, philosophise. We run through better versions of how we would have preferred things to have happened, which makes us braver, more competent, better in the next similar situation.
Sometimes, we get stuck.
